Groupe DDM was asked to characterize the biotic and abiotic features of 493 ha of natural lands scattered at random throughout the territory of the City of Vaudreuil-Dorion. The method used was based on the Guide to Preparing Wetland Conservation Plans, produced by the Ministère du Développement durable, de l’Environnement et des Parcs (MDDEP). A MDDEP representative was also contacted to identify the studies and analyses required for the ecological characterization. The first step was to gather and analyze existing information in order to collect biological and spatial (GIS) data on the study area. This information was completed by a cartographic analysis in which the study area was divided into sectors composed of contiguous blocks. These sectors were then used as analysis units for the remainder of the project. The environments in each sector were photo-interpreted and mapped in order to structure the fieldwork and presentation of findings.
A number of specialized inventories were produced by experts in order to characterize any special status plants, birds and reptiles in the habitats best suited to or considered priorities for development. These inventories were carried out at different times of the year (from spring to fall), to cover the phases of the life cycle during which the species in question could best be detected (flowering, migration, nesting, etc.). A more general and systematic inventory was also carried out to confirm and produce an ecological characterization of all the environments (terrestrial, wetland, waterside and aquatic) identified by photo-interpretation, and to document any disturbances.
The characteristics identified were presented in an ordered and standardized way in a characterization report, in the form of descriptive records and a summary map for each sector. The report also described the methodology used and the characterization results for the area as a whole.
